GreenBox (JunctionX Budapest '23)

My Teams submission for the 2023 Budapest X Junction hackathon. We worked on Greenbox, our project, for 48 hours. We also made a YouTube video that introduces our product, you can find the link here.

In 2023, my friend and I participated in a Hackathon organized by Crafthub. It was Budapest’s largest hackathon event organized up to that point, with more than 300+ people attending offline. My friend and I also participated offline, at MOME (A hungarian university’s campus).

This was our first time attending a Hackathon.

This hackathon lasted 48 hours, meaning all of the work you see here was done in the span of 48 hours.

We had a tons of fun and it was great for getting some experience too. We had to work really hard, because people usually compete in teams of 3-5, but it was only two of us in the team. Making it more difficult, only I knew programming.

There were 4 challenges you could choose from. We choose the one about sustainability. In short, the prompt for the challenge was

"Increase sustainability and environmental awareness within big cities".

Our solution: Greenbox

Our ideas was to make people living in cities more aware of nature, by bringing nature to them. Our solution was a high-tech "cultivation" box, which helps you raise a plant by providing you feedback on how your plant is doing. It achieves this by using a combination of sensors like, soil quality and moisture sensor, air humidity sensor, light sensor, temperature sensor etc. It can process this data into a human readable message, like "Water your plant", or "Your plant isn't getting enough sunlight". Greenbox uses artificial intelligence to give your plant a personality, and talk about its problem in first person, making the connection more personal.

Our aim was to make people think more about nature. By helping them raise a plant, in an environment where they otherwise would not have (cities), we are not only helping the planet but also increasing people's

environmental awareness.

Result: 5th place!

We were very surprised when it turned out we came 5

th

in our challenge. There was a leaderboard for each one of the challenges. To get in the final round of votes, you had to be in the top 3 in your challenges leaderboard. We were not far off!

I certainly did not expect this. This was my very first time competing in a Hackathon.
